Guided lab tours

On Thursday, April 13, 5:30-6 pm and Friday, April 14, 4:45-5:15 pm there will be a chance to participate in a guided lab tour on Campus Hönggerberg of ETH Zürich. Staff members of the respective institution will give an overview of the research and the facilities of the lab. The three different tours take place at the same time and have the same duration. The tours are offered for free, but the number of participants is limited to 25 persons each. Participation thus requires personal registration at the registration desk. This will be possible on site at the registration desk of IVK starting on Thursday morning.

Robotic Fabrication Laboratory (RFL)

Guided lab tour 1: Robotic Fabrication Lab (RFL, 30 minutes, tour in German)

Modern, robotic construction and fabrication processes are investigated in the Robotic Fabrication Lab (RFL) of the Institute of Technology in Architecture. Within a space of 43x16x8 m3 concrete, steel and wood constructions can be created at scale 1:1 using a multi-robot-system. The research focusses particularly on structures which cannot be fabricated using established standard processes, and on methods and materials for more efficient construction with reduced environmental footprint. More information regarding this lab can be found at the website of the RFL.

Guided lab tour 2: Immersive Design Lab (IDL, 30 minutes, tour in English)

The Immersive Design Lab (IDL) of the Center for Augmented Computational Design in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (Design++) at ETH Zürich provides a platform for collaborative research and teaching in these areas using extended reality. The lab is equipped with up-to-date visualization and audio technology which is primarily used for interaction with design and engineering models as well as for the further development of human-machine-computer interfaces in connection with the control of design and construction processes. More information regarding this lab can be found at the website of the IDL.

Geodätisches Messlabor (GML)

Guided lab tour 3: Geodetic Metrology Lab (GML, 30 minutes, tour in English)

The geodetic metrology lab (GML) of the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry enables for instance research towards refraction-compensated electrooptical distance measurement, remote material identification and remote assessment of material properties using a multi-spectral laser source. If successful, our newly developed distance measurement system may increase the accuracy of EDM and augment 3D laserscanning to enable entirely new applications. For this research we use one of the world’s longest fully automated horizontal comparator on which we also test and calibrate commercial EDM instruments and terrestrial laser scanners. More information on our research can be found at the website of the professorship of Geosensors and Engineering Geodesy.
